1850 A State In Motion
Growth, Gold & New Beginnings
Following the discovery of gold in 1848 and California's entry into the Union in 1850, westward migration transformed the state. As the population grew, the quiet rural lands surrounding Temescal Sulphur Springs — what Glen Ivy Hot Springs was known as before the 1880s — began to see increased activity and growth.
the First Country Inn
A Soak for a Quarter
By the 1870's the first country inn took shape in a simple adobe building, welcoming visitors to the healing mineral waters. For just 25 cents, guests could enjoy a swim — complete with a bathing suit and towel.
1880 A Name Takes Root
The Birth of Glen Ivy
In 1880, English-born owners William and Louisa Steers gave the springs a name inspired by the landscape around them. Wild grape "ivy" growing at the mouth of the canyon — or "glen," as it was more commonly known in England — inspired the name Glen Ivy Hot Springs.
A Resort Takes Shape
From Country Inn to California Escape
When Frank and Mabel Johnson purchased Glen Ivy, they began transforming the property into the resort they envisioned. By 1922, the original adobe building had expanded into a true hotel, followed by a new concrete bathhouse is 1927. As Glen Ivy's reputation for healing waters and warm hospitality grew, the rise of the automobile brought the retreat within easier reach of Los Angeles — helping turn the Johnsons' dream into a beloved Southern California destination.
1942-1977 A New Era of Escape
Glen Ivy Takes Flight
In 1942, Danish hotelier, Axel Springborg took ownership of Glen Ivy Hot Springs and continued its transformation into a true destination resort. As Southern California prospered in the postwar years, guests — including notable visitors arriving by plane at a nearby airport — came to experience the mineral waters, scenic setting, and sense of escape that defined Glen Ivy. In 1964 Springborg sold the property to the Corona-based Temescal Water Company, which worked to modernize the aging resort. When those efforts fell short, Glen Ivy returned to Springborg's ownership in 1970.
A New Vision for Glen Ivy
Expanding the Experience
In 1977, The Emissaries of Divine Light acquired Glen Ivy Hot Springs and began a new chapter of investment and growth. Over the decades that followed, the resort expanded its amenities and introduced experiences that would become part of the Glen Ivy Tradition — from the Lounge Pool in 1984 to the Bath House is 1999 and Roman Baths in 2001. In 2002, the iconic Grotto and Club Mud were introduced, followed by continued expansion in 2006 with new gathering spaces, cafés, terraces, and private cabanas.
2016 A New Chapter Begins

As Glen Ivy entered a new era, GOCO Hospitality took the helm in 2016 with a vision to honor the destination's storied past while throughtfully shaping its future. Through significant investment, elevated guest experiences, and a renewed approach to wellness, GOCO has continued to transform and enhance the property.
